Ultra lightweight hand for small robots

“Lightweight materials” + “Molding technology” realize a hand shape that fits the workpiece

Lightweight and flexible transport hand

Lightweight body supports robot arms with small payload capacity

Customized hand shape to suit the workpiece

Amazing facts!

── Introducing ideas and technologies ──

The Transport Hand is for cooperative robots to transfer a wide variety of workpieces.
CFRP additive manufacturing is used for the components.
The high strength-to-weight ratio enables the production of free-form shapes that could not be produced with conventional machining methods.
Along with the lightweight and high-strength body, the hand shape can be freely customized to suit the workpiece.
Automation of a wide variety of workpiece transfers.

Lightweight due to CFRP and hollow interior

Excellent!

Through CFRP additive manufacturing, Transport hand achieves weight reduction to 1/10th: from 5.3kg to 530g.

Weight reduction is achieved by material replacement from metal to CFRP with a specific gravity: 1.2 g/cm3 and hollow internal structure.

“Current status and challenges”

  • The shift to smart factories and the promotion of carbon neutrality have led to calls for manpower, resource, and energy conservation at manufacturing sites, and automation through the introduction of robots is one of the solutions to these needs.
  • The need for automation in workpiece transfer is also increasing, and while emphasis is placed on the lightness of the hand due to the robot’s limited payload capacity, at the same time, functionality is required to grasp a wide variety of workpieces and transfer them to the desired posture and position.

“Development points”

  • The “Transport Hand” uses CFRP additive manufacturing for its components, enabling the manufacture of lightweight, high-strength bodies and free-form shapes that cannot be produced with conventional machining methods.
  • The hand shape can also be freely customized to suit the workpiece.
  • Since the hand is ultra-lightweight compared to metal hands, it can transport heavier workpieces when the same robot arm is used.
