Case studies and examples of problems solved

Elastic analysis:
Study of optimum coolant hole position

Problem

Welding (built-up-edge) on tool cutting edges causing quality defects.

Solution

Elastic analysis was carried out and coolant holes were placed in positions that did not reduce the strength of the cutting edge, improving welding (built-up-edge).

Elastic analysis (stress calculations)

Optimum arrangement of coolant holes

Topology optimisation:
Consideration of highly rigid tools

Problem

The borehole holder is not rigid enough and causes chattering.

Solution

Topology optimisation was carried out to increase stiffness and reduce chatter within the quantity limits.

Topology optimisation

Rigidity UP

Deformation analysis of rubber materials:
Sealing performance evaluation of plugs

Problem

Air leaks have been a problem in the inspection process of the sealing performance of plugs (rubber plugs) due to sporadic air leaks.

Solution

Deformation analysis of the rubber material was carried out to calculate the air sealing condition from the pressure distribution on the contact surface, narrowing down the test piece for efficient evaluation.

Pressure distribution (deformation) analysis

For efficient evaluation

Contact friction analysis:
Study of replacing inserts with interchangeable inserts

Problem

Brazed cutting tools are used, but operating costs need to be further reduced.

Solution

Contact friction analysis was carried out to determine the optimum shape, which enabled the use of insert replacement systems, thereby reducing running costs.

Reduced operational costs

Natural vibration analysis:
Prevention of tool chatter

Problem

„I want to take precautions against some tools that might be easily spooked or damaged by a new project.”

Solution

The tools were subjected to natural vibration analysis and the equipment was prepared with chatter-resistant machining conditions and tools by measuring vibrations (hammering) and understanding r-vibration characteristics.

Chatter-resistant machining conditions
Chatter suppressing tools (e.g. dampers)

Transient response analysis
Consideration of temporary platforms

Problem

Requires a temporary rest to hold the tool by hooking the shank only.

Can it be held by hooking only?

Solution

A transient response analysis was carried out to produce a temporary rest stand that can hold the tool stably even if it vibrates when placed on it.

Realisation of a temporary stand

Analysis of the relationship between the passage of time and vibration (movement).
