Shank-groove GHI reamers have a coolant groove on the shank periphery, which contributes to lower tool cost by using inexpensive standard materials.
The shank-groove GHI reamer can supply sufficient coolant to each cutting edge and maintain the same machining condition even after resharpening.
The left-hand spiral suppresses coolant dispersion when the rotation speed is increased and improves chip evacuation to the front side.

“Current status and challenges”
- Conventional through-hole reamers can apply coolant directly to the cutting edge, but are expensive due to the need for special materials.
- The coolant contact changes each time the reamers are reground, which reduces machining accuracy and tool life, and the increased frequency of re-grinding also increases tool costs.
“Development points”
- By directing coolant straight to the cutting edge along the shank, we developed a reamer with a uniform coolant contact and no effect on accuracy and tool life even after regrinding.
- By adopting standard materials, the cost of materials is kept low, and combined with shank-groove technology, contributes to lower tool costs.
